The ability to lock a cell or a Sheet is instrumental in maintaining the integrity of your data. However, there will be instances when you need to unlock a cell to update or edit its information.

A warning box will appear, prompting you to remove the protected range. However, click the “Remove” button if you want to unlock the cell.

Once you click the button, your cell is open for alteration by anybody with document editing rights.”

How to Lock Cells in Google Spreadsheets

That’s all there is to it! Then specify editing settings and allocate specific cells or sheets to your team. After that, you and your team may work comfortably on the same Google Sheet without fear of accidentally editing or deleting crucial information.”

Locking a Single Cell

You may also want to lock a single cell in your spreadsheet for various reasons. This method should resemble locking several cells and columns in Google Sheets.

To Lock Cells in Google Spreadsheets, follow these steps:

Right-click on the partition you want to protect and select Protect Cell.

Select View more cell actions > Protect range from the menu.

Click Insert a sheet or content.

Fill in the blanks with a name or description for your cell.

The menu for protecting sheets

Set permissions by clicking the button.

Select the specific limits you want to apply to that cell.

Click the Done button.

This method locks a single cell based on your permission settings, but the remainder of the spreadsheet is accessible to anyone you share it with.

Lock Cells and Grant Edit Permission to Selected Individuals

What if you want to lock a cell so that certain people other than you can alter the cells?

This is simple in the fantastic world of Google Sheets.

Assume you want to lock cell E2, but you also want to offer your colleague the option to alter it if necessary.

Then the processes to lock a cell (or range of cells) and grant edit authority to someone (many people) are as follows:

Right-click on the cell you wish to lock and select Lock.

Select View additional cell actions > Protect range.

Select Add a sheet or range in the ‘Protected Sheets and Ranges’ box on the right.

[Optional] Enter a description for the locked cell.

The reference to the selected cell would already be visible in the Range option. If you want to lock another partition, you can do it here.

Select the ‘Set permissions’ option.

In the ‘Range editing permissions’ section, choose’ Custom in the ‘Restrict who can edit this range’ option.

Enter the email addresses of the persons you wish to enable to modify then locked cell/range/sheet in the ‘Add editors:’ box.

Click the Done button.

Then the preceding steps would lock the selected cell for everyone except individuals whose email addresses you submitted in Step 8.

You can add more persons to this list later to provide edit rights to others. Also, if you wish to revoke permission from someone who already has it, you can do so.

This option to enable selective access to cells/ranges while locking all other cells is quite beneficial to me. Assume ten workers must enter data into the same Google Sheets spreadsheet.

So, you can configure the permissions such that each individual has editable access to only the cells that they need to fill. In this manner, they can’t tamper with other people’s data (deliberately or unintentionally).

In Google Sheets, you may protect entire sheets.

You can protect an entire sheet as you may save a single cell or a group of cells.

And, like with cells and ranges, so you can keep it entirely sealed for everyone or provide access to certain persons who can update it.

You can also choose to leave some sheets unlocked while protecting a sheet.

The procedures to safeguard a whole sheet in Google Sheets are as follows:

Right-click on the sheet tab you wish to protect and select Protect.

Select ‘Protect the Sheet.

[Optional] Enter a description for the Sheet you’re protecting in the ‘Protected Sheets and Ranges’ pane that appears.

Then selected sheet name would already be visible in the Sheet choice. If you want to protect another sheet, you can alter the sheet name here.

Select the ‘Set permissions’ option.

Ensure ‘Only you’ is chosen in the ‘Restrict who can edit this range’ option under the ‘Range editing permissions.’

Click the Done button.

The methods outlined above would secure the Sheet so that you could only edit it.

When you Lock Cells in Google Spreadsheets, you can also do the following:

You can grant some of the people who can edit it access. Select Custom in Step 6 and then enter the emails of the persons who will have access to and can change the sheets.
